The primary purpose of your job position is to maintain assigned areas in a clean, sanitary, safe, orderly, attractive manner in accordance with established procedures, and as directed by yoursupervisor, to assure that the highest degree of cleanliness and sanitation is maintained at all times.


Listed below is an outline of the duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. Even though your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete as possible. HOWEVER, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities.

  • Receive and follow cleaning schedule/instructions from your supervisor and/or as outlined in our established housekeeping policies and procedures
  • Empty and sanitize ash trays (ash trays MUST be emptied into appropriate METAL CONTAINERS with self-closing cover devices)
  • Clean/polish furnishings, fixtures, ledges, room heating/cooling units, etc. in residents’ rooms, living/recreational areas, etc. as instructed
  • Clean, wash, sanitize, and/or polish bathroom fixtures (assure water marks are removed from fixtures)
  • Clean windows/mirrors in resident rooms, living recreational areas, bathrooms, & entrance/exit areas as instructed
  • Clean floors, to include sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, waxing, buffing, disinfecting, etc. as instructed (ensure that CAUTION/SAFETY signs are properly set up PRIOR to performing such duties and removed after)
  • Clean carpets, to include vacuuming, shampooing, deodorizing, and disinfecting, as instructed
  • Clean walls and ceilings by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, disinfecting, deodorizing, etc. as instructed
  • Remove dirt, dust, grease, film, etc. from surfaces using proper cleaning/disinfecting solutions
  • Clean hallways, stairways, and elevators as necessary/instructed
  • Dispose of waste/trash into proper containers and reline trash receptacle with plastic liners
  • Report all unsafe/hazardous conditions, defective equipment, etc. to your supervisor immediately
  • Report burned out light bulbs, to include exit lights, overhead lights, fluorescent lights, room call lights, etc. to your supervisor as soon as possible
  • Ensure supplies have been replenished in assigned work areas as necessary
  • Clean vacant rooms, as assigned, to assure they are ready for occupancy
  • Assure that work/cleaning schedules are followed as outlined for respective shift/area
  • Attend and participate in inservice educational classes and on-the-job training programs
  • Assure that the facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly manner for resident comfort and convenience
  • Perform terminal cleaning procedures, as instructed, when a resident is discharged and/or transferred to another room/area, to assure that the room is ready for new occupancy
  • Perform cleaning/sanitizing procedures in ISOLATION ROOMS/AREAS, as instructed, and in accordance with established infection control policies and procedures
  • Assure that work/assignment areas are clean and free of equipment, supplies, etc. before leaving such areas on break, end of work day, etc
  • Keep work/assignment areas free of hazardous objects, such as protruding mop/broom handles, etc. and assure that all cleaning supplies, equipment, etc. are properly stored at the end of your shift/work day
  • Other related duties as may become necessary or as directed by your supervisor, department director, and/or administrator


  • Sitting, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving intermittently during working hours
  • Works in all areas of the facility
  • Subject to frequent interruptions
  • Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs
  • Subject to reactions from dust, housekeeping, and disinfecting solutions, falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc
  • May be subject to infectious diseases, substances, etc
  • Communicates with nursing personnel and other department personnel
